Key word indexing system

Keyword indexing systems

“Keyword” means catchword or significant word mainly taken forms the title and /or sometime form abstract or text of a document for the purpose of generation of indexes. Thus, keyword indexing is based on the natural language of the document to get index entries and no controlled vocabulary is normally required for this indexing system. Here, entries are made under each keyword, selected for the purpose. The words chosen may be single words, multi –words or even phrases that convey the content.

Kwic index
As mentioned
earlier earliest, h p luhn tried exploit potentialities of computer to derive a solution to the problem of speedy dissemination of information this resulted in the kwic (key-word –in context) index based on titles of documents it requires minimum of intellectual effort compared to producing those of traditional indexes.. It is teken for grated that the author has taken sufficint care in preparing .an informative title which is basically a single sentence summary of a paper

Format and strucure

Each entry in kwic index consists of three parts: keywords context and identification or location code
a) keyword:significant words of the title which serve as approach /access terms
b) context:the rest of the terms of the title alonwith the key words specifies the context of the document
c) identification location code :A code which provides address of the document where its full bibliographic description will be available

Variations of keyword index
Varieties of keyword indexes are evident in the literature and they differ only in methodologies of display of approach terms but indexing techniques remain more or less same. Some variants of keyword indexes are below.
KWOC (=key-word-out-of-context)
KWAC (key-word-augmented-in-context)
KWWC (key-word-with-context)

Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
1) The principal merit of keyword indecent is the speed with which it can be produced
2) The production of keyword index does not involve intellectual effort and thus it saves costly efforts of indexing staff.
3) Vocabulary control are not required

Disadvantages
1) The efficiency of keyword indexing depends invariably on the question of reliability of expressive titles of documents as most of such indexes are based on titles. If the titles are not meaningful, the system becomes in3effective, particularly in humanities and social sciences
2) Most of the terms used in science and technology are standardized. So, the p0roblem of natural language vocabulary is not so scattered.
3) Related topics are scatted.
4) Searches very oft3en lead to high recall and low precision

Conclusion
The keyword index has been quite popular during the last three decades. A number of evaluation studies have indicate that keyword index may offer several advantages over other conventional systems.

canon of reticence

Ranganathan has formulated the following four canons for work in verbal plane. Which may helpful classifications and the classifier in the correct interpretation of terms? These canons are.
1) Canon of context
2) Canon of enumeration
3) Canon of reticence
4) Canon of currency

CANON OF RETICENCE
The definition: - the canon directs that “the terms used to denote a class or a ranked isolate in a scheme for classification should not be critical that is express any opinion of the classificationist
The demand of the canon of reticence is that the classificationist should refrain himself in using such terms in a scheme for classification, which may hurt the feeling of others. In general all the schemes conform to this canon.
Up to DDC 14 the term minor author was used by DDC in main class literature regarding this arbitrary distinction ranganathan then observed How can anybody assert who is minor and who is major writer? At any rate, classification’s has no business to parade his own opinion about the relative values of authors in the schedules of his scheme. The offensive term minor writers can easily be replaced by the colorless, but perfectly description one other writers this critical work however was dropped from DDC 15 own wards.
In DDC16 the term humbug was used as a subdivision of occultism the term humbug means deception hoax or a person who attempts to trick or deceive. The use of such a term is also the violation of the canon of reticence the tem was replaced by frauds in occultism in DDC17.
