Key word indexing system
Keyword indexing systems
“Keyword” means catchword or significant word mainly taken forms the title and /or sometime form abstract or text of a document for the purpose of generation of indexes. Thus, keyword indexing is based on the natural language of the document to get index entries and no controlled vocabulary is normally required for this indexing system. Here, entries are made under each keyword, selected for the purpose. The words chosen may be single words, multi –words or even phrases that convey the content.
Kwic index
As mentioned earlier earliest, h p luhn tried exploit potentialities of computer to derive a solution to the problem of speedy dissemination of information this resulted in the kwic (key-word –in context) index based on titles of documents it requires minimum of intellectual effort compared to producing those of traditional indexes.. It is teken for grated that the author has taken sufficint care in preparing .an informative title which is basically a single sentence summary of a paper
Format and strucure

Variations of keyword index
Varieties of keyword indexes are evident in the literature and they differ only in methodologies of display of approach terms but indexing techniques remain more or less same. Some variants of keyword indexes are below.
KWOC (=key-word-out-of-context)
KWAC (key-word-augmented-in-context)
KWWC (key-word-with-context)
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
1) The principal merit of keyword indecent is the speed with which it can be produced
2) The production of keyword index does not involve intellectual effort and thus it saves costly efforts of indexing staff.
3) Vocabulary control are not required
Disadvantages
1) The efficiency of keyword indexing depends invariably on the question of reliability of expressive titles of documents as most of such indexes are based on titles. If the titles are not meaningful, the system becomes in3effective, particularly in humanities and social sciences
2) Most of the terms used in science and technology are standardized. So, the p0roblem of natural language vocabulary is not so scattered.
3) Related topics are scatted.
4) Searches very oft3en lead to high recall and low precision
Conclusion
The keyword index has been quite popular during the last three decades. A number of evaluation studies have indicate that keyword index may offer several advantages over other conventional systems.
